Mosaic (July 10)

"Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful." —Hebrews 10:23

Getting up on waterskis used to be easy. Younger, stronger arms and legs made it feel like no big deal—just lean back, wait for the pull, and up I’d go. These days, it's not quite so simple. I feel the rope tug in my arms before the boat even begins to move. There’s that ache in my grip, the struggle to keep the skis balanced, the mental focus to stay upright.

“Hold fast” takes on a vivid new meaning.

The writer of Hebrews exhorts us to hold fast the confession of our hope—not because our own strength will carry us, but because He who promised is faithful. When we fix our eyes on the One who has called and saved us, we find the anchor we need to keep holding on.

Even once I’m up on the skis, there’s that shaky feeling—the sense that I could tip over at any moment. (And often I do, with the most dramatic splash you can imagine!) But as the years have gone on, I’ve noticed that holding fast in faith has become a little more natural—not because I’ve become stronger, but because I’ve come to know the One holding me.

The longer I’ve walked with Jesus, the more I’ve seen His faithfulness—not just in the dramatic rescues, but in the quiet endurance. My trust has grown through prayers whispered in desperation, through promises clung to when nothing made sense, through the steady presence of a God who never left me, even when I didn’t feel Him near.

Anthony Burgess once wrote, "Faith is an undeniable conviction of the mind because when grace operates upon the soul, it makes a true impression." When we truly know the grace of God—when it presses into our hearts—it shapes our faith. Not a shallow optimism, but a deep, resilient trust that holds firm even when life pulls and shakes us.

If you’re in a season where holding on feels more like flailing, take heart. Our hope isn’t in the strength of our grip—it’s in the faithfulness of our God. And He has promised to hold on to you.

Where in your life do you feel the strain of holding on right now? How might you shift your focus from your own strength to the faithfulness of the One who has promised?
